I’m a Peacock

I’m a Peacock

I’m a bird with personality

I am very colorful

I’m a sight for sore eyes

I can fly but not for long distances

I prefer the ground to the sky

I will fly to avoid danger or to get across a stream

I can not get my feathers wet as that will weigh me down and weaken me if I get caught up in the waters

I must be careful as I can not swim

My feathers are my calling card

They distinguish me from other birds

They bring smiles to children’s faces at the zoo where they can see me up close and personal.

I live in India, Asia and Africa and I can be found at zoos and nature parks around the world that can support my lifestyle in a warm climate.

I’m a docile bird and I prefer my privacy.

Peacocks are shy and solitary birds and usually only stay near their families and will not gather with birds of another feather.

They also will hide from plain sight unless they are trained by care workers at zoos and gain confidence in front of the many audiences that visit them to get a look at their colorful feathers and see them closeup.

There are three species of peacock birds in the world.

Indian, Green and Congo are the respective species of peafowl.

Although there are only 3 species there are many varieties of peacock numbering in the hundreds.

Peacocks live in woodlands and forests and usually seek the trees for refuge for protection and for the cooler temperatures.

Peacocks are omnivores eating both plants, seeds, fruits, insects and small animals.

Peacocks also need water regularly and will seek it at all types of water sources in the wild.

The life expectancy of a peacock depends on if they live in the wild or in captivity at zoos and bird sanctuaries and nature parks.

In the wild peacocks can live between 15 and 20 years and in captivity some have lived up to 45 years.

In culture the peacock is symbolic of a major television network and is prominently displayed as part of their advertising campaign and is their iconic symbol since coming on the airwaves.

Peacocks feathers are typically blue and green and are accentuated by the sunlight that reflects off them.

The peacock is one of the most beautiful birds you will see if you’re lucky enough.

Peacocks have mating calls and attract one another by their colorful displays and you can hear them in the distance from their scream calling.

It’s very loud and very distinctive and you will know it once you hear it.

You will know it’s a peacock calling in search of a mate.

A baby peacock is called a peachick and it weighs around 4 ounces at birth and still has further development to go before it gets its colorful feathers and grows to typical size as a magnificent peacock.

Peacocks are male and peahens are female.

If you are lucky enough to get to see me you will notice my colorful feathers and unique look. If you have a camera remove your flash when taking a picture as I’m sensitive to the light.

Enjoy the experience and appreciate my colorful feathers.

Also please take care of the environment and take necessary precautions with regards to climate change and global warming.

Our lives depend on it.

I depend on a safe environment and safety from drastic weather conditions.
