I’m a Racehorse
I’m a Racehorse
I love to run every chance I get.
I’m up at the crack of dawn.
I focus on my speed workouts and developing my strength and stamina.
Running to me comes natural and I am blessed by God to have such talent and ability.
Everyone is in my corner to help harness my greatness from the trainers, veterinarians, caregivers, managers, owners, jockeys, photographers, and publicists.
I’m treated like royalty and given a name befitting of my standing in competition.
When I race there’s no time for socializing or making friends.
I have to run at optimal levels and must always be tested before my races.
My entourage takes good care of my needs and sees I’m well fed and in the best possible health I can be in.
I’m sponged down after my races so I don’t get overheated and tested for fractures or injuries.
If I’m injured I can’t compete and a lot of money is on the line so I’m truly pampered and always have my veterinarian on call.
I feel anxious before my races with nervous butterflies but once my jockey saddles in and I’m at the gate it’s showtime and I do what I’m meant to.
I run my race and I always put forth my best effort every time I’m on the race track.
I am always in the top 3 but I need to focus on closing the gap so I can get to number 2 and even to the front.
I’m running at over 35 miles per hour but the fastest race horses are near 55 miles per hour.
I’m a thoroughbred but I have to be very careful in my competition because the turns are tight and the straightaways are long and our races are very competitive and I’ve seen some of my friends go down with injuries and sadly some had to be put to sleep.
That’s the hardest part of being a racehorse.
We run so we can make our owners a good purse but we run the risk of putting our lives at risk for the sake of sport.
Some of my friends who have been forced to retire now live their lives on a farm where they no longer have the pressure of racing and can enjoy the beautiful landscape of lush farmlands as they leisurely gallop in the sun by the mountains with their other horse and animal friends.
I hope one day to join them and reminisce about the times we ran together and in competition.
I have an incredible bond with my jockey who helps me to run my best race.
It’s like we are one and the same.
I love when I eat and drink and I’m always needing to have lots of water so I don’t dehydrate.
I tend to eat hay and foods specially prepared for race horses as I need over 30,000 calories a day to operate at peak performance and I must see my vet everyday.
Wild horses like to roam the countryside and can graze in the grass for many hours a day.
That’s my goal after I hang up my horse shoes.
I love when the kids come to say hello to me but I can do without all the cameras and the interviews after each race.
One horse that comes to mind as one of the greatest racehorses of all time loved by all is Secretariat who won the Triple Crown in 1973 and won the Belmont Stakes by 33 Lengths, a record that seemingly will never be broken.
Racehorses are beautiful and majestic as they seem to run with such ease and grace.
As with all racehorses I just want to have my privacy and sleep in the barn and not be caught up in the post race hoopla or the pre race jitters.
When I’m on the track I will always run my best because
I’m a racehorse.
