I’m an owl
I am a bird that is all wise and knowing by reputation
I like hanging out on the branches of mighty trees
I have a unique look
I stay up in the night
Some though prefer the day
Owls have piercing eyes
Oblong body shape
Round faces
Small beak
They are mysterious creatures that intrigue bird enthusiasts and anyone who loves birds
They can fly but are not generally long flight birds
They are however very quiet in flight
They easily glide and can fly distances of between 2 to 10 miles
Owls have distinctive feathers, contour that aid in flight and down that help insulate and keep them warm in winter weather
There are many different types of owls and nearly 200 species.
Some common owls are barn owls, snowy owls, elf owls, spotted owls, barred owls, great grey owls, spotted owls among others.
Owls live all around the world with the exception of Antarctica.
Most owls do live in tropical areas as they thrive in warmer climates but some do live in colder climates and do migrate when the temperatures get too cold.
Owls are generally solitary birds that prefer living alone but some form a group known as a parliament of owls.
Owls are truly amazing in that they can rotate their heads three quarters of a turn.
They habitat in forests, marshlands, deserts, cliffs, beaches, suburban areas and parks.
Owls feast on other smaller birds, insects, rodents and seek water when necessary.
Owls are low flying birds as they don’t go sky high like most birds.
In popular culture owls are portrayed as wise creatures like “Mr Owl” in the tootsie roll lollipop commercials where the owl is asked how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop and he concludes 3 licks before biting into the center.
Another popular brand featuring the owl is the Wise Potato Chips as they feature the owl in their logo.
Owls truly are fascinating animals and children of all ages are curious about the owl.
The smallest owl is the elf owl growing to a length of only 5 inches with a wingspan of 9 inches.
The largest owl is the Eurasian eagle owl with a wingspan of nearly 7 feet.

The most common owl in the United States is the Great Horned Owl.
Owls are known for the sounds they make and their most distinctive is their hoot.
Owls have existed in the world for over 60 million years based on fossils and have adapted to many different conditions and environments over time.
